Milei Statuette, Anyone? Meloni to Auction Off World Leaders' Gifts for Charity
Getting rid of unneeded gifts might be considered somewhat rude – unless it's done in the proper manner.
A Philanthropic Sale
Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell a reported 270 gifts given to her by world leaders while abroad. This unusual assortment could include gifts including a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.
These items, collectively, have an approximate value of €800,000. They are scheduled to be auctioned off via competitive bidding by a Rome-based fine art auction house. An exact timeline remains to be announced, although the intention is to hold the auction during the holiday season, with all funds raised benefiting non-profit organizations.
Storage Room Treasures
The items are currently stored in a secure area on the third floor of the prime minister's official office. It has been reported that Meloni additionally intending to auction off gifts received by her political forerunners that have been stored away over a long period.
A complete inventory remains officially released, but some insight was gleaned earlier this year when an 11-page list of all declared gifts was presented in parliament. The query focused on if a rule restricting expensive presents was being respected. According to regulation, a prime minister cannot take home presents exceeding €300.
An International Assortment of Gifts
The collection includes:
- A woven wrap from the leader of Albania, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A sari from Kerala from the Indian leader.
- A set of adornments from the president of Slovakia.
- A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
- A tablet from the leader of Ukraine.
- Paintings from Moldova.
- Various other items including makeup, a board, and numerous carpets received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Possibly the most unusual gifts included the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," observers have said.
Diplomatic Context
Meloni has been credited, mainly from her allies, with winning over foreign leaders and making Italy as a key protagonist on the international platform once again.
This charitable initiative symbolizes a novel approach to handle the state presents that accumulate during a leader's tenure.
