UN:Me: An Psychological Horror That Blends Silent Hill and Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive experience where a girl harboring several personalities within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Within her exist four distinct personas, each with unique fears and motivations. These entities can take over at will, releasing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy hospital, while additional clips depict the main character exploring a desolate church.
An Environment of Personal Horror
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to other people can activate something primal inside us. This game explores that idea — fears that are unique to every individual."
The core mechanic involves controlling whichever soul surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the protagonist one after another. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the lobby have large flowers growing from their necks should be. Flowers are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, because every entity can lie or hide the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The final entity remaining might be a fraud. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
