An extensive 60-day journey circling Australia has been cancelled following the death of an older female passenger who was left behind by the ship on a remote coastal location.

The elderly woman had been trekking on the tropical location with shipmates from the cruise ship, but broke off from the excursion for a pause. The ship sailed away leaving her and came back after some time after the ship staff became aware the woman was not present.

A major hunt discovered her body the following day.

Authorities are investigating the tragedy, alongside police and the medical examiner.

Head of the cruise operator said that travelers and crew on the vessel were notified that the rest of the voyage had been terminated due to the "unfortunate death and prior engine troubles".

In a statement, he added that guests would be issued a total repayment, and said the operator was working "to arrange the homeward trips of the passengers via specially arranged planes".

Authorities also published an latest statement, and said they had "issued a notice to the Master" banning any additional guests from getting on the liner.

The spokesperson said that they would inspect the ship in the port city upon its coming back.

The liner initially left Cairns on 24 October, and was just two days into the voyage at the time of the senior passenger's passing. The remote island was the first stop on the voyage.

Guests on the vessel - who typically pay large sums of money to participate in the cruise - were ferried there for a daily excursion with the choice of trekking or underwater exploration.

The child of the victim said that her relatives was "stunned and grieved that the liner left the island after an planned tour without my parent".

Via her announcement, she characterized her mother as an "active elderly person" who was a affiliate of a hiking organization.

"From the little facts we have been informed, it seems that there was a breakdown of care and ordinary reasoning," she stated.

She added that she hoped the inquiry would be able to identify what "the organization should have undertaken that might have protected Mother's life".

"We understand from the investigators that it was a very hot afternoon, and mother became unwell on the hill climb," she stated.

"Officials suggested her to head down, unescorted. Then the boat departed, reportedly without performing a roll call.

Operator Reaction

In a statement, the CEO verified that the company was "collaborating extensively with authorities to support their inquiry".

He said that the firm was "extremely apologetic that this has happened" and had offered its complete assistance to the relatives.

The ship caters for up to 120 guests with 46 staff, according to company information. It was specifically designed to reach remote areas of the nation's shoreline and is fitted with "tenders" - compact vessels used to ferry travelers on land visits.

Occurrences such as this are infrequent, and passenger vessels have protocols to record which travelers are boarding or disembarking, according to industry experts.

"Going ashore secretly or [back] on the ship really isn't an choice," one expert stated.

Cruise lines take these methods with great importance and have "clever tech in place to prevent such incidents from happening," the expert further stated.

"This appears to be probably a surprising - and unfortunate - one-off."
